Mechanism of Action: As a stimulant laxative, bisacodyl works by directly irritating the smooth muscles of the intestines (specifically the colon) to increase muscle contractions (peristalsis) and promote a bowel movement. It also increases fluid and salt secretion into the bowel, which helps to soften the stool. Onset of Action: The time it takes to work depends on the form used: Oral tablets/capsules: Typically work within 6 to 12 hours. They are often taken at night to produce a bowel movement the following morning. Rectal suppositories/enemas: Work much faster, usually within 15 to 60 minutes. Usage: It is intended for short-term use only (no more than one week unless directed by a doctor). Prolonged use can lead to dependence on the medication for bowel function and potential electrolyte imbalances. Common Side Effects: These can include stomach cramps or pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Precautions: Do not take oral tablets within one hour of consuming dairy products (like milk or yogurt) or antacids, as this can break down the protective coating on the tablets and cause stomach irritation.
